Montrose Boys Wrestling had a Tri-Dual last night against Fruita, Grand Junction Central, and Battle Mountain winning two of those duals against Central and beat Battle Mountain (53-24) and losing a close dual to Fruita (33-36).

The Montrose Boys Wrestling has a record 4-3 has beaten Durango, Battle Mountain, and Paonia while being beaten by Fruita (twice) and Central.

The team also has top (5) ranked individuals. The individuals are Raul Martinez 3rd ranked in weight (195) and Kamron Alegria ranked 5th in the state and 1st in the Western Slope at weight (120). Both are undefeated.

With it being such an awkward season, there was barely any time for preparation, so Alegria worked extra hard in the offseason.

“Champions are made in the offseason, I just think that extra work will put you where you want to be,”  Alegria said.

Many things have also changed after the first week, Dmarian  Lopez earned a varsity spot for weight 220 moving Brandon Van Nooten to wrestle Heavy weights.

“My goal is to help the team out, and try to place top 2 in the region and go to state,” Lopez said.

With a shortened season just filled with duals and little to none wrestling tournaments, seniors won’t be able to feel the full experience of a senior season.

“It’s weird, it’s not the same, the competitions and all the way to practices are different. Not only do I care and worry about the outcomes of my matches, it kind of sucks not being able to get the full senior experience,” senior Raul Martinez said.

With a goal of going to state it will be a lot harder, in order to qualify for State you have to place top 2 which was last year you only had to place, which will knock a lot of top people out for state.

“My ultimate goal is to go to state and win it, but the small goals is to come out of this season a better healthier person,” Martinez said.

At home Friday, Feb 12th, Montrose will have a dual against Delta High. MHS Media will be streaming this dual, and we are going to have a Tri-Dual against two top 5 schools Pueblo County and Cheyenne Mountain Saturday, Feb 13th and that will be streamed on NFHS network.
