The Montrose Indian football team won their first game Thursday August 26 against Grand Junction Central at Stocker Stadium by a huge margin (46-6) scoring 28 points in the first half. The Indians are off to a strong start opening the season off with a 1-0 record after the win against Central.

Montrose is looking pretty solid on both sides of the ball with the defense allowing 0 points to be scored on them and the offense only punting the ball 1 time all night. However, the team had multiple penalties that could have cost them points.Austin Griffin scored 2 touchdown runs.

“We can improve on a few things like fakes on our runs, timing, completing higher percentages, and our discipline,” quarterback Bridger Kurtz said.

The Indians have a lot of experience this season having 10+ seniors on the team with 8 of them being starters on the defense.

With a good defense also comes a good offense which is being led by sophomore Gage Wareham in his first varsity game and senior Kurtz who helped lead The Indians into the playoffs last year.

“It was awesome, I loved every minute of it, but the real work is just beginning,” Wareham said.

With going to state being a team goal it will take every man on the team to do their job.

“My goal is to lead our offensive line into the right direction, and get us moving like a complete unit,” said junior Dmarian Lopez.

With a lot of good things happening for Montrose they unfortunately lost their junior, 2nd team all league offensive linemen Raul Rascon after being hit in the knee in the 2nd quarter. The extent of his injury is not known at press time.

“Whoever steps up to play guard I am going to try to make them as good or maybe even better than me, the team has a goal and we can’t just let one injury make us take a step back. We just got to keep playing Indian football,” Rascon said.

Friday, September 3rd the Montrose Indian will take on rival Fruita Monument at home at 7.
