Another win for playoffs
Montrose getting ready to score
November 18, 2021
The Montrose Indians football team kept their undefeated streak going after beating the 17th seed Denver South Ravens (56-19) on Friday November 12th in the first round of 4A playoffs.
The Indians didn’t have star running back Austin Griffin, but that didn’t stop the Indians from putting up 35 points in the first half of the game. Montrose had a total of 8 touchdowns coming from Ethan Hartman(3), Blake Griffin(2), Gage Wareham, Torrie Eckerman, and a touchdown reception from senior defensive end, Luke Barney.
There were some new additions to offense since Tayne Ila (Guard/Fullback) was limited due to a lingering ankle injury. To adjust the lineup, they added Sophomore guard Kortlan Nelson in the mix and also added some more power to the offense with defensive lineman Jaxxon Tosi.
“It was fun, and faster paced but there was nothing better than lining up with the bros and hitting the crap out of someone,” Nelson said. “ Playing with amazing teammates always makes it enjoyable.”
Montrose is now heading to the Quarterfinals and will face the #8 Fountain-Fort Carson Trojans this Friday at 6 pm at home.
The Trojans have some power offensively and defensively as they have a three star recruit middle linebacker #33 Tai Faavae and the leading rusher of class 4A #21 Dezmen Oliver with over 1,000 yards rushing.
The Trojan’s offense won’t have it easy; they will have to start from their own 20 almost every time because of the starting varsity kicker, Sandier Leyva’s, powerful leg. Leyva has had only struggled one game this season and that was against the Ponderosa Mustangs because longsnapper Isaah Womack was quarantined. As a result two of Leyva’s kicks were blocked.
“Extra points are crucial especially in really close games and if I can get the other team to jump offsides that what I’m going to do,” longsnapper Isaah Womack said.
The Trojans and The Indians will face off in Montrose for the first time since 2007. This game will take place Friday November 19 @ 6pm this game will also be streamed on MHS Media or NFHS
