This past April of 2022, several Montrose High School Students received a Division Award to congratulate them on their performances in class and as individuals.
April’s Division Award recipients included Leonor Nieves-Chavez, Ellie Duncan, Vivian Ficco, Westley Lucero-Escalante, Makayla Shreeves, Danny Chavarria, Brandon Grijalva-Castro, Gabrielle Lewis, and Katherine Allison. All recipients reported to the Library before school on April 6 to receive their awards for their efforts.
“The teacher who nominated me was Mr. Scriffiny,” sophomore Gabrielle Lewis said. “He told me it wasn’t super specific, but he thought I was good at understanding the things he taught. He believed that I could take any material he gave and understand and be able to not only learn it, but put my own opinion into what I had learned.”
The Division Award is an opportunity to recognize students for their achievements, from positive attitudes to high performances in the classroom, and everything in between.
“The teacher who nominated me was Mr. Appling,” Freshman Ellie Duncan said. “He said he liked my attitude in class and how I was as a person.”
This opportunity allows for teachers to show appreciation for a student that they feel goes above and beyond.
“She’s always smiling and in a great mood, and it is contagious,” MHS math teacher
Jake Appling said. “She is an extra teacher in the classroom. When people sit by Ellie, they no longer ask me questions, they ask her. She goes over and beyond learning, she wants to understand for the knowledge, not just the simple content.”
“I was super surprised and felt super honored that one of my teachers noticed how hard I work in my classes. It was just so nice to be able to know that my efforts weren’t unnoticed,” Lewis said.
