The MHS cheerleading squad was going steady into their season, but now that football season has started back up again, the cheer squad is taking a swing into their season. The cheer team is led by Sharon Bacus and her husband Tom Bacus. The senior captain of the team is senior Shyian Perrin. As a team they choreograph the team’s routines.

As with all other activities, COVID has had a huge impact on the way the team held tryouts and the way they practice. The team does expect to have a semi-normal competition season that will start in January. The team also expects to cheer for the basketball and wrestling teams.“We couldn’t have regular tryouts, which led to having a much smaller team than usual. We also are required to always be wearing a mask while we practice and while we perform,” Sharon Bacus said.

Cheerleading is a sport that is all about performing for a crowd which is sometimes intimidating. For junior Caitlyn Cowin being a cheerleader is  about getting to know more people and about being there for your team members when it gets hard.“[Cheerleading] is about showing spirit to our school and our community,” Cowin said.“It got me out of my comfort zone and it just clicked with me,”she said. The season is just getting started and as with any team, they are practicing to get better and be ready for competition in January.
